The House Built on the Rock and on the Sand | September 11, 2021

From the book “Truth For Today: A Daily Touch of God’s Grace” by John F. MacArthur

"It did not fall, for it was founded on the rock."
"Everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand." - Matthew 7:25-26

The house founded on the rock represents the life of spiritual obedience. It’s the life that takes a scriptural view of itself and the world, as described in Christ’s Beatitudes in The Sermon on the Mount. It’s the sort of life that’s more concerned about internal righteousness than external form. It’s a life of genuineness rather than hypocrisy, and of God’s righteousness rather than self-righteousness.

The house based on the rock depicts the life that empties itself of pride and human good works and is humble and repentant because of its own sin. Such a life strives, with the Spirit’s help, to enter the narrow gate of salvation and be faithful to the narrow way of Christ and His Word. The life built on the rock trusts in God’s will and hopes in His Word above all else. Where does your hope rest and your trust lie?

The house built on the sand symbolizes a spiritual life built on the foundation of human opinions, attitudes, and wills, which are always shifting and unstable. If you build your life on this foundation, you are building it on self-will, self-sufficiency, self-righteousness, self-purpose, and self-fulfillment. If you choose sandy foundations, your life will be based on false teaching and will fall short of salvation—”always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth” (2 Timothy 3:7).

Don’t be like the one who superficially and carelessly chooses section of the world’s sand to build his hope on. Instead, be concerned about the depth of spiritual reward that comes with wisely considering and carefully choosing God’s solid foundation.
