Breaking Our Addiction to Materialism (February 4, 2021)

From the book “Seeing the Unseen: A Daily Dose of Eternal Perspective” by Randy Alcorn

Blessed day everyone, welcome po to our daily devotions. And today, we’ll be looking at Luke 12:15, as we discuss about materialism and how do we break our addiction to materialism.

15 And he said to them, “Take care, and be on your guard against all covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.”

Luke 12:15 (ESV)

It’s a warning for us to be mindful sa ating mga tinatangkilik, because we may not be aware of it that we are being consumed na of things that we like or things that we love. And just on the onset I just want to share, we would know if we were indeed consumed already by these possessions when we cannot give them up. If we are having a hard time giving that up. It is good for us; I mean it’s fine for us to enjoy God’s blessings in the earth in the world but for us to be possessed or being possessed by our possessions that is a different thing. And isa po sa signifier dun is that we cannot give them away and or if we do things that are not in accordance to God’s will just for us to get them. Right? so that is a beautiful reminder of the Lord for us.

John D. Rockefeller said, “I have made many millions, but they have brought me no happiness.” Scripture says, “Cast but a glance at riches, and they are gone, for they will surely sprout wings and fly off to the sky like an eagle” (Proverbs 23:5, NIV).

Again, there is nothing wrong with material blessings if the Lord has provided for you or has blessed you but we need to understand that they are not what make us who we are, Christ is our identity. Kaya nga sabi ko kanina, we would find out if we are consumed or if we are being possessed by our possessions already if we cannot, if we are having a hard time giving them up or giving them out, or if it does not give us joy to share these blessings that the Lord has provided for us.

12 Sweet is the sleep of a laborer, whether he eats little or much, but the full stomach of the rich will not let him sleep.

Ecclesiastes 5:12 (ESV)
