From the book “Truth For Today: A Daily Touch of God’s Grace” by John F. MacArthur
"You should love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength." This is the first commandment. - Mark 12:30
In addition to the words of Jesus in today’s verse, other New Testament books make it clear that believers are to love God. Paul wrote to the Corinthians, quoting from the prophet Isaiah, ” ‘Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those who love Him'” (1 Corinthians 2:9). Elsewhere the apostle refers to Christians as “those who love our Lord Jesus Christ in sincerity” (Ephesians 6:24).
Sincere love for God is the first mark of genuine saving faith. That is true “because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us”(Romans 5:5). In view of all this, it’s no accident that Paul lists love as the first aspect of the Spirit’s fruit (Galatians 5:22).
